Pedi-Pole’n Your Way to Back Relief

November 10th, 2011 by Stef No comments »

The National Institute of Neurological and Stroke attributes most back pain to aging. Claiming the intervertebral discs begin to lose fluid, which decreases their ability to provide cushion between the vertebrae; although, trauma, obesity, and too little exercise can, of course, speed up this process. Back pain affects approximately ninety percent of  all Americans at some point in their life. Listed below are some of the most common conditions provided by the National Institute of Health.

Furthermore, I decided to share how the Pedi-Pole aids in lengthening your spine while increasing core strength—all back pain sufferers should consult a specialist or physical therapist for manual manipulation and x-rays for any pending nerve damage—by illustrating its functionality and concept.

Common Conditions

Bulging Disc (also known as protruding, herniated or ruptured disc)-when the intervertebral discs move out of their central cavity between the vertebrae and end up applying pressure on a nerve.

Sciatica-when the herniated disc pushes on the sciatic nerve.

Osteoporosis-the weakening of bones in density or strength.

Skeletal Irregularities-such as scoliosis, lordosis, and kyphosis.

Pedi-Pole Pulling You to Greatness

The Pedi-Pole provides a unique exercise technique—using the pole to assist in alignment or using the instability of the pole to channel all weight distribution into your “Powerhouse”—different from the rest of the equipment found in a “classical” studio.

Pilates, as we know, is all about lengthening and developing core strength. Yet, how do we familiarize ourselves with the correct sensation?

The answer lies within the spring-resistance-equipment created by Pilates, himself. For example, when using the arm springs found on the Pedi-Pole, it is imperative you continuously feel your hands drawing away from your body. This technique trains your muscles to lengthen and then move, preventing your upper-body from taking control of the movement and inevitably creating a “gripping” sensation. Lengthening through your exercises will pull the energy into your “Powerhouse”, inevitably increasing core strength, and resulting in stabilizing your spinal column relieving any acute associated back pain.

This is just one of many examples that is taught in the classical method. The attention to detail is what makes all the difference in Pilates and what ultimately makes all the difference in your muscular development.

Do I Really Need to Sit in The Electric Chair?

Unlike our conventional understanding of an Electric Chair, which was used to put those guilty of atrocious crimes out of society’s misery, a Pilates Electric Chair serves a very different purpose.

Moving from the Reformer to the Cadillac, the second most versatile piece of equipment, it is important to know the Cadillac was originally developed from a bed.  That way those who couldn’t walk could still gain the benefits of corrective exercise from this giant gem.

Importance

The Cadillac is second in line to the Reformer in importance.  This contraption, often referred to as the “torture chamber” can be quite intimidating.  Safe to say its nickname is true to form, in that whatever you lack the Cadillac will address head on. Therefore, she could be your worst nightmare or your beloved!  This piece of equipment is where you will work on specific issues.  Like a therapist, the Cadillac is where you will unload all your deepest, darkest secrets. » Read more: The Cadillac

The Pilates Reformer

The Reformer also known as the “Apparatus”, is the most basic piece of Pilates equipment, which is usually reserved for first time clients. The purpose of this unique piece of equipment is to assist in working within your frame and discover muscle isolation and control.

The Reformer as with all Pilates equipment aids in developing core strength through spring-resistance training. Yet, the Reformer is unusual in that the carriage sits on rails allowing you to move by either pressing on the foot bar or pulling on the arm straps.

Surfing Costa Rica, the breakdown

July 3rd, 2011 by Stef No comments »

My latest travels included a quick jaunt to Central America for some much needed warm water surf. Having already visited Nicaragua and Panama, I decided to hit the Jurassic Park of the Latin world.  Since I was flying solo on this mission, I made it super easy on myself and resided on the Nicoya Peninsula, in Tamarindo; easily the most Americanized city in the country.
